Lawn Aerators

If you find that your lawn is dying and no amount of fertilizing and irrigating seems to be improving its health then you may need to aerate the soil. Lawn aerators are garden tools that allow you to make holes in the soil and remove pieces which have the effect of reducing soil compaction. Then ground is allowed to take in more oxygen and moisture and other nutrients can be applied directly to the root system.

Though the lawn aerator is often confused with lawn tillers, they different on the basis of what to they do to the soil. As stated above, aerators merely makes holes in the ground they do not dig up the soil as tillers do. There are two basic types of tillers: 1) the lawn core aerator; and 2) the spike aerator. Each one has it own pros and cons but it has been suggested that core lawn aerators are more effective than spike lawn aerators due to their method of pressing into the soil. The core lawn aerator punches a distinctive hole or depression while the spike aerator does cut into the ground with less precision.

There are three different styles of lawn aerators. The first one is the manual lawn aerator. They are pretty basic in design and can resemble manual reel mowers (also called rolling lawn aerators) or giant forked tools that you have to hand press into the ground. The second style is the gas powered lawn aerator and depending upon the manufacturer, the design of these models may vary in size and shape. The last style are those lawn aerators than can be pulled behind garden tractor.

The size and working capacity of lawn aerators is often determined by the applications that you have in mind. For larger lawns, particularly for public buildings and businesses, a commercial lawn aerator will likely be your best choice. They have more performance power than a smaller home lawn aerator.
