Lawn Rollers

Lawn rollers are a simple but effective garden tool that is used in lawn maintenance. It is utilized as a method for leveling the surfaces of uneven lawns when the ground has been disturbed by digging or animals like moles and rabbits churn up the ground with their burrowing. You may also use a lawn roller as a form of compression for pressing down the soil around new grass seed when you are planting a new lawn or reviving old areas.

Like most garden tools, the lawn roller is available in different sizes and styles. The first point that should be made is that you can buy manual lawn rollers and those that are pulled behind a garden tractor or riding lawn mower. If you have a large lawn or field you are trying to roll you may choose the larger poly lawn rollers which like having two standard rollers side by side. It covers more than twice the space that a smaller lawn roller wood. Lawn rollers can be made of different materials as well. Some will opt for the steel lawn roller while others those made out of concrete.

One unique application of certain types of lawn rollers can be seen in both residential yards and out on the ball field. If you have ever seen the distinctive striping pattern on the grass then you have seen the work of a lawn striper roller. Some people want to add a bit of flair to their lawns so they use a lawn striper roller which creates a characteristic striped pattern to the lawn by using a setting to bend the grass in specific ways.

Of course if you don't pay for a brand name steel roller you could always build a lawn roller yourself. Now this isn't as hard as it might seem. As was mentioned above, the lawn roller has a simple design. If you want to make a lawn roller, you can easily locate a serviceable lawn roller plan on the internet or in some home and garden supply stores. Many people have come up with their own ingenious designs, from using 50 gallon barrels to creating molds for crafting their own concrete lawn rollers.

Building a lawn roller is a great alternative to buying one but you should be very careful about the materials that you use and the shape they are in. You need a shape that will roll smoothly and not leave any grooves or tear into the ground. If you take some time to find a good design, you shouldn't have any trouble with your homemade lawn roller.
